VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of developing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the most substantial spacecraft created domestically to date. This satellite aims to identify and examine interference disrupting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The initiative centers on detecting jamming and spoofing signals from orbit, as well as collecting data on when and where navigation signals are compromised.

Serving as a technological showcase within a multi-year research and development effort, BEACONSAT focuses on understanding radio interference known as jamming, which blocks or weakens satellite navigation signals. Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology company responsible for overseeing the mission. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For this project, the company provides the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. To date, GATE Space has conducted more than 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian Technology Underpins the Satellite Initiative
Key systems for Austria’s first military satellite are supplied by other European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN contributes technology designed to precisely detect and analyze GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, such as the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems initially developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also backed GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with an approximate funding of 750,000 euros.
The European Space Agency supports and helps fund the mission via its ESA Marketplace program, which is designed for technology demonstrations. This program facilitates the testing of commercially available space technologies for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT primarily as a demonstrator rather than an operational satellite. Its purpose is to collect orbit-based data on interference affecting satellite navigation signals, which will inform the Defence Ministry as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT Is Part of Austria’s Expanding Space Program
The Austrian Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated unit focused on space services, encompassing satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a component of this emerging framework, with an emphasis on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy aims to shift from merely utilizing space services to managing space infrastructure and systems. Austria adopted this strategy in 2023, with plans for implementation extending into 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch in February 2027, using a Falcon 9 to place the satellite into orbit, remains the official timetable. Following deployment, BEACONSAT will conduct data collection and analysis related to GNSS interference as part of its research mission. This collaborative effort involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technological firms. It will mark Austria’s debut military satellite mission, focusing on testing domestically developed systems for monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation systems.
